Get the chance to head to Ravenna which was the capital of the Western Roman Empire until it collapsed in 476, then the capital of the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths and finally the capital of the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna. Thanks to its bright past, the complex of the early Christian monuments of Ravenna was declared World Heritage by UNESCO. In Ravenna, you can feel Art, History and Culture in every corner. Recognized worldwide for its historical and artistic treasures, the city preserves the richest heritage of mosaics dating from the 5th and 6th centuries AD within its early Christian and Byzantine religious buildings.
On the way from Venice to Ravenna, you can break the trip in two making a little stop at the Abbey of Pomposa, a masterpiece of Romanesque Art which can be seen from a distance with its towering campanile. The church was founded in the 6th century A.D. and from the middle of the 9th century the first community of Benedictine monks began to form, reaching its peak after the year 1000.
Once arrived in Ravenna, your first stop will be the Teodorico Mausoleum, an unusual burial monument erected by Ostrogoths’ King Teodorico as his future tomb, dating back to the 6th century. After a leisurely lunch – at leisure - you’ll have the choice to explore more of Ravenna and discover wonderful examples of Christian architecture dating back to the 6th century with spectacular mosaics such as the Basilica of St. Apollinare Nuovo, the Neoniano Baptistery (known as the Baptistery of the Orthodoxies), the Basilica of St. Vitale and the Galla Placidia Mausoleum.
